Trinidadian And English Christmas
Well Christmas 2009 is here and as usual there is lots of food involved. It seems that in Trinidad you think about the food and then you decide what to do around the food you have decided and the same is true with Christmas. The most important thing to do is make sure you know what will be on the Christmas table.
In our house though it is not just a Trinidad Christmas, it is also a English Christmas. So at the table you will find a Turkey with ALL the Trimmings but maybe surprisingly you will find Macaroni Pie, Stewed Chicken, Fried Rice and Punch De Creme.

With me being English and my wife being Trini we try to show our children both Cultures and that means cooking more food than we could possibly eat in two weeks.
We have of course all the essential Trinidad food like Pastelles which being in England we have to make which takes plenty of time but once a year the time taken is worth the rewards. I tried my hand and making Punch De Creme which I have been imformed by my wife has too much Rum….I am not quite sure how it can have too much Rum.
We also have to have the English favourites at Christmas like Pickled Onions which my wife is replulsed by but still I like them and one day my kids may as well.
The one thing I find very strange is why dont we eat these foods all year round if they are so good. Turkey we wont touch all year , Punch De Creme is definatly not anything but a Christmas Drink, Pastelles are nice but only at Christmas.
Soon it will now be New Year and Pelau will be made so we can have money next year. Apparantly having Peas in the house the last night of the year will mean plenty of money for next year…..well lets hope so.
